Process Safety Engineer

This position is accountable for process safety compliance across the Cooper River Chemical Plant and will support safe and compliant operations. The successful candidate will be a champion for process safety and will actively engage all levels of the workforce across the Operations, Maintenance, and Projects teams. The Process Safety Engineer will demonstrate the ability to organize and successfully manage teams in order to resolve process safety issues and drive process safety improvements. Training of site personnel, leading incident investigations, reporting of site process safety performance and participation in process safety networks are all dimensions of the role. Effective communication is an important element to ensure that management is well informed so that risks can be properly resolved.

•Facilitate and participate in process safety incident investigations, including analysis, lessons learned development, training and communication
•Provide training on process safety aspects including risk/hazard awareness, hazard analyses and process risk reduction
•Provide guidance and implementation management on applicable process safety regulations such as the OSHA PSM standard, industry standards such as NFPA and API, and on company process safety standards such as Safe Design Limits.
•Maintain and develop systems to monitor processes and programs, including audits and assessment, and provide feedback to management via scorecards and updates
•Support the Projects Team with process safety expertise
•Provide consequence analysis modeling on process safety risks
•Facilitate and support use of process safety tools such as Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) – HAZOP, What If Checklist, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and General Risk Analysis (GRA). This includes facilitating minor HAZOP and LOPA studies
•Provide technical support through daily monitoring of process and control/monitoring systems to eliminate process safety events
•Provide guidance on process safety program development anticipating, recognizing and implementing methods to control risks
•Conduct process safety audits, identify discrepancies, and implement corrective actions as needed
•Interact with Process Technicians and Engineers to resolve process safety questions and concerns
•Work with Reliability and other personnel to manage Safety Instrumented Systems and critical instrument programs
•Work with support organizations within the BU and wider BP to capture, share, and implement best practices and new technologies in process safety
•Participate in BP process safety networks
•Preference will be given to technically competent, internally motivated, and results-oriented individuals with leadership capabilities.

Engineering Degree required

•A minimum of 8 years experience in process safety or technical support of operations in a petroleum or chemical processing facility
•Experience leading process safety studies (such as HAZOP or LOPA)
•Experience leading/participating in incident investigations
•Experience troubleshooting manufacturing processes
•Thorough understanding of chemical engineering principles and the ability to apply these in real world situations
•Detailed knowledge of relevant process safety regulations and industry standards
•Ability to support projects with process safety expertise
•Ability to influence across all levels of the organization
