Introduction
The Position
ILRI seeks to recruit a Clinical Officer into the Biotechnology theme to provide support to ILRI research
projects. The purpose of this post is to join the Urban Zoo field team undertaking clinical examinations
and data collection in the field in Nairobi, working closely with ILRI partner organisations. It is 100%
funded by project UoE003.

Minimum Requirements
Requirements
• Certificate or Diploma in Clinical Medicine from a recognized institution
• Two years of experience as a clinical officer, preferably in a research environment
• Ideally on the job training with other research projects (preferably on zoonoses).
• Must be actively registered with the Clinical Officers Council.

Other competencies
• Teamwork, general good personality, adaptable to working in households and any other site in
the city that may be involved in sampling.
• Willing to spend sometimes long days in the field (returning daily to the central laboratory.


Job Specification
The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in

Key responsibilities
• Represent the project with residents in the study area, and maintain good relations with
participating study subjects
• Undertake clinical examinations of adults and children participating in the study and record clinical
findings, according to project protocols, and using electronic data recording tools
• Undertake blood sampling from adult and child study subjects according to project protocols
• Oversee the collection of faecal specimens from children and advise adult participants in
appropriate self sampling techniques
• Assume responsibility for the delivery of field material to the laboratory
• Undertake detailed socio-economic and behavioural questionnaires with study subjects
• Maintain records of locations visited
• Prescribe appropriately for diagnosed conditions or provide appropriate referrals
• Take care of the project resources
• Maintain a professional attitude at all times, especially with respect to confidentiality
• Maintain good relationships with the local health infrastructure in study zones
• Any other duties that may be assigned by the senior project staff

Terms of Appointment
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus. It is open to Kenyan
nationals only. This position is on a 1-year fixed contract.
